About
The violinist.
Dr. Saikat Karmakar performs on violin and viola across the West Texas and Hudson Valley, New York areas. He serves as Assistant Principal Violin II for the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra and the Lubbock Chamber Orchestra, and joins the Hudson Valley String Quartet for the upcoming season.
He has previously performed with the West Texas Symphony, Ohio Light Opera, and the Amarillo Symphony. Saikat holds a Doctor of Musical Arts, with study at the University of Georgia, Michigan State, Montclair State, and Texas Tech.
His doctoral research examined the directivity of the violin's sound on a horizontal plane — how the instrument actually radiates into a hall — an acoustician's curiosity that shapes how he plays and blends.
Away from the stage, Saikat plays badminton and other racket sports, enjoys a good shopping trip, and spends his time with his wife and their five cats.

The engineer.
Dr. Saikat Karmakar is a recording and video engineer specializing in classical music. Before relocating to the Hudson Valley, he was Lead Audio Engineer for the Texas Tech University School of Music, capturing every kind of performance the school produced — large ensembles, chamber groups, opera, recitals, and faculty albums — plus the editing, mixing, and multi-camera video that turned them into finished releases.
Saikat records and masters the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra's Masterworks Series, and his engineering credits include projects for Navona Records, OA2 Records, and SONY Classical. He is Dante certified and works fluently across audio and video post.
His doctoral research on the directivity of the violin's sound gives him an unusually physical sense of how instruments radiate into a room — the kind of ear that knows where a microphone really belongs.
A performer as well as an engineer, Saikat plays in the section he so often records — so a session is judged by the same ear that has to sit in the audience.
